Obsolete treatments

Obsolete treatments given in the Narcosis Room

There is evidence to show that some patients were also given a modified form of an obsolete treatment known as insulin coma whilst undergoing Narcosis and the evidence for this is the dramatic weight gain of up to three stones by Narcosis patients and one nurse’s account of injecting patients with insulin. The actress Celia Imrie gives an account of her treatment by Dr William Sargant on Ward 5 at The Royal Waterloo which can be read in the INSULIN COMA section of this website and tends to confirm the use of insulin coma on Ward 5.

Ether abreaction, another obsolete treatment was also used on patients, although we don’t know if this was used in the Narcosis Room or on the main Ward 5.

You can read a description of these mechanistic/physical treatments used on Ward 5 in the PHYSICAL TREATMENTS FOR MENTAL ILLNESS section on this website.
